Membership of the choir is administered through the Sydney Community College which also provides a preparatory course of Music Skills Essentials. Entry is through the course or by audition. The Sydney Welsh Choir: Based at the church hall of Concord Baptist Church with more than seventy men and women drawn from all parts of the Sydney area. Not all choir members were born in Wales; some have Welsh family links while others simply like being part of a choir. Joubert Singers: a community SATB choir based in Hunters Hill in Sydney under the direction of Rachel Elliott. They sing a broad repertoire of choral music, from the 15-21st century. They have about 30 members. Inner West Chamber Choir: under the direction of David Hood (and Rachel Elliott) with about 30 members. The web site for this choir is inactive and it is not clear if the choir is still operating. The Newington Community Choir was formed in late 2010 by Ms Lauris Elms AM OBE and is directed by Elizabeth Slottje. The Choir welcomes and caters for new and experienced singers who want an opportunity to sing with others in a relaxed, friendly environment and no audition is needed. We sing in four part harmony, unaccompanied, in the acappella style. It is not necessary to have a ‘good’ voice or to read music. Singing is a refreshing activity, which harmonises and enriches each singer’s contribution to the whole choral effect. We sound and feel better when we sing. We meet in the Newington Community Centre from 1pm to 3pm on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays (except school holidays). Sydney University Graduate Choir: based at the University, the choir sings great choral music by the established masters and by contemporary composers under music director Christopher Bowen OAM. Membership of the choir is open to: Graduates, Diploma Holders, Students, and Staff of the University of Sydney and of other universities; and other persons admitted at the discretion of the Committee. To join, an audition with the Music Director is required. Rehearsals at the Seymour Centre, most concerts at the University’s Great Hall. Polyphony: Based at Lewisham under the direction of Corin Bone; they say they are a Sydney chamber choir that “doesn't like boredom”. They don’t charge fees and don’t audition. Sydney Threshold ChoirThe all-women Threshold Choirs honor the ancient tradition of singing at the bedsides of people who are struggling: some with living, some with dying. The voice, as the original human instrument, is a true and gracious vehicle for compassion and comfort. The choirs provide opportunities for women to share the sacred gifts of their voices at life’s thresholds. When we are invited to a bedside, we visit in small groups. We invite families and caregivers to join us in song or to participate by listening. We choose songs to respond to musical taste, spiritual direction, and physical capacity. The songs may include rounds, chants, lullabies, hymns, spirituals, and choral music. The Sydney Threshold Choir group meets at 6.30 pm every 2nd and last Wednesday of the month at Beyond the Ordinary Tea House & Healing Center, 314 Darling Street, Balmain. Cost is $8 per person and includes an endless cup of tea.
